Support & Services

Local Parenting Support & Services

If you are a family in the East Riding, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council are aiming to encourage and help residents to use the correct bins for family waste. East Riding residents are currently the top recyclers in the country (out of 380 authorities in England) at 65.4% of all household waste being recycled, which is fantastic. Let’s try to increase this even more by making sure the right waste is going in the right bin, to keep the blue bin material as clean as possible.

You can read the Mumbler blog about nappies here.

If you have a large, young family and need more, any residents who feel they are struggling with their current bin capacity should contact (01482) 393939 or wastewatchers@eastriding.gov.uk for advice and help.

You can find more information on their website here.

East Riding Health Visitors and School Nurses- ISPHNs

ERIC – The Children’s Bowel and Bladder Charity

ERIC is the only charity dedicated to the bowel and bladder health of all children and teenagers in the UK. Their vision is that “every child and teenager with a bowel or bladder condition can access support and live free from embarrassment, shame, isolation and fear”.

Bowel and bladder problems have perhaps more impact than almost any other medical condition on children’s self esteem, education and social relationships, and effective treatment can change children’s lives. The stress that comes with dealing with a child’s wetting or soiling problem can be considerable for families too. Disrupted sleep, constant washing of clothing or bedding and a reluctance to leave the house can place a heavy burden on family life. We hear every day from parents struggling to cope with the consequences of their child’s condition.

Most bowel and bladder problems are avoidable and treatable, yet it’s estimated that only 11% of those affected ask for help. In England alone, there are 15,000 hospital admissions for paediatric cases of chronic constipation and urinary tract infections (UTIs) each year. 80% of these could be avoided if the problems were spotted early and dealt with properly, according to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

If you need help or advice to with your child’s bowel or bladder visit ERIC’s website here or call the free helpline 0808 169 9949

Fatima Allam Birth Centre

The Fatima Allam Birth Centre is an Alongside Midwifery Led Unit situated on the Labour & Delivery Suite on the 2nd floor of the Hull Women & Children’s Hospital. The environment is more homely, and the focus is on birth without medical intervention. Our ethos puts women at the centre of their own care; supporting them in making decisions about how they want to give birth whilst ensuring safe and high quality care is maintained.

The Birth Centre is staffed 24 hours by midwives who provide midwifery led one-to-one care to women who have uncomplicated pregnancies. We have a team of midwifery assistants working on the Birth Centre who work in partnership with women and midwives to provide supportive, individualised care.

There are 3 en-suite birthing rooms that are designed for women to stay in throughout labour, birth and after birth until transfer home or to the postnatal ward should this be required. Two birth partners (adults) can be present throughout your whole stay here on the Fatima Allam Birth Centre.

The Fatima Allam Birth Centre has a friendly home-from-home atmosphere which can help women feel more relaxed. The spacious birthing rooms are beautifully presented with dimmed and coloured mood lighting, with facilities to allow women to play their own music via CD or Bluetooth.

Each room has a birthing pool providing women with the option of using water to assist their movement, encourage relaxation during labour and birth. The Fatima Allam Birth Centre is an ideal place for healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies, who do not want a home birth, and yet don’t want or need a hospital-like facility. Women may consider birthing here if they would like to use different coping methods such as birthing mats, balls and stools; these help women to adopt different positions to aid their comfort throughout labour and birth. We also support the personal use of complementary therapies and TENS machines which have been agreed in the plan of care made by the woman and her midwife.

If you’re a healthy first time mum and having a straightforward pregnancy, planning to give birth in a birth centre is particularly suitable for you because it’s as safe for your baby as planning to give birth in a labour ward, and you’re less likely to have medical interventions. Similarly if this is your second, third or fourth baby then birth in a birth centre is as safe as giving birth in a labour ward but with a reduced chance of medical interventions. If you’re unsure about being eligible for a birth centre birth please speak to your midwife or contact 01482 607860.

Recycling Family Waste Hull & East Riding for Kicks Count

Dedicated to recycling family household waste items that can’t be put in the recycling bin. Items are then processed through Terracycle which then gives back points for weights which are ‘cashed in’ for money for a chosen charity. Our chosen charity is Kicks Count. The waste doesn’t go to landfill and it earns funds for a great charity too.

We collect – biscuit & cracker wrappers, crisp packets, confectionary packaging, stamps, baby food pouches and dental care products.

All information is on their facebook group here, please contact organiser Gemma through there.
