Hull Museums & Feren’s Art Gallery are a good, free day out throughout the school holidays. There are also lots of extra arts and crafts activities during the school holidays. They are all free; some are drop in, the relaxed sessions have limited numbers so need booking in advance. Details coming soon.

Are you considering buying the kids, husband or wife a train set for Christmas but know little about train sets? The Hull Miniature Railway Society are holding a FREE event, open to Mums and/or Dads and Grandparents, offering advice on the types available, reliable suppliers, how to set up and maintain it, and more, on Saturday 26th October 2024 10am and 1pm at their clubrooms on Wincolmlee, in Hull (the event is aimed at grown ups looking for advice, not at children, but they can attend with you). Water’s Edge Visitor Centre & Nature Reserve – located on the south bank of the river Humber at Barton, DN18 5JR. A great, free day out for the Autumn with boardwalks and trails around the nature reserve to explore. Extra activities with a small charge:
Love Your Meadow Wildflower Planting at Humber Bridge Country Park: Saturday 26th October 2024: come and help plant over 4,000 wildflowers, make a fairyland garden and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Friends of the Humber Bridge Country Park. Free event (but you need to book a ticket), suitable for all. There are two sessions 10am – 12.30pm or 1pm – 3.30pm. Each booking reserves a trail of flowers to plant in the meadow, book a space here.
Hull Libraries have lots of free children’s activities and sessions running.
East Riding Libraries also have free activities and events (see below in low cost activities for their Hallowbean show).
The Village Hotel Hull Health & Wellness Club on Priory Park Hull have a great offer – a FREE one day pass. You can use the pass as a family and take the children to use their pool, or if you have a teen you can take them to use the gym with you (over 14s only), or you can use it yourself to try all the facilities – the gym, a class and the pool. Simply sign up on their website here and one of the gym team will call you to discuss what type of pass you would like.
Hallowbean at East Riding Libraries: Dr Frankenheinz is rustling up something special for the annual Halloween cooking competition, the Hallowbean! Suitable for ages 3-11 years. Tickets £3 per child, adults do not need a ticket. Book at your local library.
Have an ‘Ice Day at Hull Ice Arena! Skate this autumn at Hull Ice Arena from just £8! With skate hire and skate aids available for hire, everyone can join in, whether you are a beginner or a pro. With public skate sessions every day, it is the perfect way to get out, get active, and have good fun with friends or family, find the latest timetable here.
Dalby Forest – From conker collecting to jumping in leaf piles, there are so many brilliant, low-cost autumnal activities for the whole family at Dalby. £9 to park all day, free entry. Also for half term: Gruffalo sculpture trail and Pumpkin Spotters trail are free, Gruffalo’s 25th birthday trail (£4 per pack).

Bridlington Ice Trail – Saturday 16th November 2024, 10.30am to 5.30pm. Free event. The Ice Trial will feature a variety of stunning frozen sculptures with a ‘Christmas on the Coast’ theme. A magical trail will guide visitors through the heart of the town, depicting traditional Christmas scenes as well maritime wonders, reflecting Bridlington’s rich coastal heritage. There will be live ice carving in which a sculptor will craft an impressive Yuletide masterpiece from an enormous block of ice. The fascinating glacial art carving will begin around 12 noon and take 2 to 3 hours to complete. Breathtaking fire and ice shows will be at 1pm, 3pm and 5.15pm and will feature ice sculpting using chainsaws and power tools, synchronised with a pyrotechnic display set to music.
