The Odyssey: Free Family Activities Scarborough

June 17, 2023

The Odyssey – The Trial of the Twelve Axes.
Scarborough town centre. Saturday 17th June 11.00am – 2.00pm

Look out for the final chapter of The Odyssey; ‘The Trial of the Twelve Axes’ – a daytime event of free family activities in Scarborough Town Centre on Saturday 17th June from 11.00 – 2.00 featuring giant puppets and live music.

You’ll see larger than life puppets moving around the town centre on the day:

Penelope – the wife of Odysseus, who has been waiting patiently for his return from the trojan Wars. She stands at over 3 metres tall!

And Odysseus himself, who has to face once final challenge to prove his identity. Only he can wield his magic bow and has the strength to fire an arrow through twelve axes.

Will he be successful? You’ll have to be there on the day to find out!

There’ll be a range of free activities for the family at the event, including face painting, balloon modelling, and art activities.

You’ll also be able to see a sneak preview of the action, with the puppet of Penelope on walkabout awaiting the return of Odysseus on the Esplanade and in South Cliff Gardens, Scarborough near the new community hub from 1.00-3.00pm on Saturday 10th June.

And the community made ‘survivor blanket’ that featured last year in the project will be on display in Scarborough Central Library in the week leading up to the event. It’s a beautiful piece of work, involving the creations of hundreds of makers from the Yorkshire Coast, and well worth a visit to see the incredible hand sewn detail and messages of support included in the blanket.
