Absolutely Cultured Research – Family Workshops

June 23, 2019

Real-world games studio Free Ice Cream are working with Absolutely Cultured to research a new story/game to take place in Hull for families and young people next Summer (2020).

We are planning to run two workshops with families who have children 9-13 years old, and we are looking for 4 or 5 family groups to take part.  Ideally we would like our families to attend both workshops, but please still get in touch if you can only do one!

These workshops form the most important part of our research so that we can make the best story/game for Hull citizens. But they also offer a lot to you: we promise that they will be fun, will inspire creative activities for you to do with your kids at home, and they are a chance to influence one of 2020’s main cultural activities in Hull.

The Workshops:

  1. The Story Workshop: Sunday 23rd June 10:00-14:00 (bring your own lunch-snacks provided) @ the K2 building, 60 Bond St, Hull HU1 3EN.This workshop is part creative writing, part games writing!  You’ll learn how to create interactive stories and how to build basic game mechanics into a bigger story-world. We’ll be exploring story-worlds within two possible genres (sci-fi and fantasy).

We’ll talk about these two story-worlds, and by looking at personal choices (loyalty, trust, fairness, authority) together we’ll create some journeys for you as an audience member to take through these worlds and explore what experiences you would find most exciting along the way.

We’ll talk about Hull’s own stories- its myths and fables, and your own family stories- and do some creative writing exercises to re-tell them within the sci-fi/fantasy genres.

This will be a relaxed workshop with two short breaks and a 40 minute lunch break. Drinks and snacks will be provided and we’ll do lots of moving around and playing mini-games to balance out the creative writing.

  1. The Games Workshop: Saturday 13th July 10.30-14.30 (bring your own lunch, snacks provided) @ The Makerspace, Hull Central Library, Albion St, Hull HU1 3TF. In this workshop we’ll play with DIY game objects, such as interactive LEDs, polarised light filters and sensors (its ok if you don’t know what any of these are!), and then take them out into the street to play some simple real-world games with them.  We’ll also be exploring different styles of collaborating to achieve ‘game missions’ and how different objects and challenges can progress our journeys through the world that we created in the Story Workshop.

This workshop will move in between indoors and outdoors, with lots of activity and moving around. It will include two short breaks and a 40 minute lunch break.  Drinks and snacks will be provided.

If you would like to attend please email getinvolved@absolutelycultured.co.uk.
