Us Mums – Exercise Classes for New Mums and Mums-to-Be
Us Mums are pre and post natal fitness classes run by the Healthy Lifestyles team at Hull City Council to encourage new mums and mums-to-be to get more active. The classes include gentle stretches and exercises and are specially designed for pregnant mums and new mums. They are run by experts and designed to do around a bump or new baby. You can go along at any stage of pregnancy and new mums can bring their baby along to the classes with them.
There are lots of known benefits to exercising during pregnancy such as easing minor ailments like varicose veins, swelling and constipation and improving sleep patterns. During my pregnancies I’ve found it really hard to find the right information about what exercise you should/shouldn’t do so I think it’s great that we now have these specially designed classes which remove the worry and mean you can exercise safely. It’s also a great way to meet other mums, there’s time for a chat at the end of the class to talk to the other mums in the same situation with bumps and babies of a similar age.
The classes launched last year and have really taken off with lots of new classes and venues being added and lots to choose from such as fitness sessions, Zumba, yoga and boxercise. Most of the sessions are £2 and there’s no need to book, just turn up. The latest timetable is below or you can see it on the Mumbler Fitness for Mums section.

The Healthy Lifestyles Team also deliver fitness classes for parents with slightly older children – Parent & Tots Dance is a fitness class for both mum and children under 5. You can find all venues and details on the Weekly Classes/Groups Page here Last month Us Mums ran a celebration event at Ennerdale where the different classes they run were showcased, it was a free event to go along and see what the classes are like. I joined in with the Parent & Tots Dance session with my daughter who’s 2 and a half and we both loved it! It was really good fun, easy to follow and I felt we’d both had a good workout too. I’m delighted that Parent & Tots Dance are coming along to showcase themselves at the Mumbler Fun Day next week. This family fun day is on Sunday 19th March 12-3pm at Princes Quay Shopping Centre in Hull. It’s a free event to come and try some of the local baby, tots and pre-school classes. Parent & Tots Dance will be running a taster session from 1.10 – 1.30pm, just turn up and join in!
Another class that I tried at the Ennerdale event was Active MumMe, sessions run by Sportsability that are designed to allow you to exercise and bring your babies and toddlers with you. There are 2 sessions, BoxFit and Pi-Yo, both where you do the exercise class whilst your babies and toddlers play in a safe area adjacent with professional childcare. They run on Thursdays at the Joan & Darby Hall, Finkle Street, Cottingham. More details on the Mums Fitness page.
With so much choice of classes, why not go along and try some!
