One of the most common playgroup and school gates conversation I hear is ‘do your children have swimming lessons? Where do you recommend?’ We are lucky in this area to have loads of choice for swimming classes, both for babies and young children. I’ve tried plenty with my children and heard about a lot through their listings on Mumbler. So, I thought it would be useful to write an article about swimming options in Hull and the surrounding areas to try to help guide you through it…..
Babies can swim from birth so you can start as soon as you feel ready. I took my daughter from around 4 months and have found it to be a really lovely, bonding activity. There are several companies who provide classes in warm hydrotherapy pools and normal pools. Here’s how they describe themselves and where they run classes…
Looking for baby swimming lessons? You’re in the right place, as the UK’s Number 1 swim school, no one else puts in the levels of professionalism, training and innovation that we do — and no one else works harder to ensure both you and your little one feel safe and happy. Our classes are suitable for babies from birth to school age . One of our core philosophies is that we teach you to teach your baby to swim with fun interactive classes and a fantastic package to accompany chapter one. In the meantime let us tell you some of the key points that differentiate Water Babies from other swimming classes;
Water Babies usually swim at several venues across Hull and East Yorkshire: Everlast Hull (formerly DW Fitness, Mount Pleasant, Holderness Road, Hull), Nuffield Health Club (Hull Marina), Winifred Holtby Hull, also in Bubwith (near Holme on Spalding Moor) and Bridlington.
If you would like more information regarding our FREE taster sessions or classes, please contact littlefish@waterbabies.co.uk, 01904 607 110 or check out their website here.
Puddle Ducks are one of the UK’s leading providers of swimming lessons to babies, toddlers and pre-school children. Our classes are designed to promote bonding, water confidence and water safety in a fun and loving environment. We take your little ones through a structured programme designed to develop their natural affinity with the water and encourage them to learn to swim independently.
And although we have spent many years carefully developing our progressive lesson plans to develop swimmers, our teachers adapt every activity to suit each child. Our approach ensures that your child’s needs are expertly fulfilled – never forcing development, but rather nurturing it to ensure a positive experience and love of swimming.
Our baby and pre-school programme is offered through five levels: Floaties (0-6 months), Splashers (6-15 months), Kickers (15 months – 2.5 years), Little Dippers (2-5 years) and Dippers (2-5 years).
Lesson are at The Village Hotel Hessle, Everlast Fitness Club (formally DW Fitness, Hull), Nuffield Health Hull, Frederick Holmes Hull, Winifred Holtby school Hull, The Palms Leisure Club (Carnaby, Bridlington).

These companies run swimming lessons from birth up to 3 or 4 years but once your child reaches pre school age then the options for swimming increase…
All local leisure centres hold swimming classes from 3 years (many also have baby & toddler sessions for before this age). The downsides are larger class sizes and often a lot of lessons going on at once but they often provide the best value for money with the cheapest classes. I didn’t do any formal lessons with my son until he was 3, just taking him at weekends and on holiday. We started lessons for him at our local leisure centre, Haltemprice, when he was nearly 4 and I couldn’t fault them for teaching him to swim quickly and well.
Swimpods run lessons for age 3+ from Frederick Holmes school, the Mercure Hotel, and Hymers college. Classes are limited to 6 children with teachers in the pool. For more information please contact Peter Lloyd at swimpods@gmail.com or on 07884480013
AquaSwim take children from age 3, from beginners right through to elite level. Lessons are held at Ganton School and Hymers College pool. You can contact them on 07749 569422 or email janet.whincup@hotmail.co.uk for more info.
There are many others, including Carl Cockcroft and CB Swimming. There is a list of all local swim schools for ages 4+ on the Primary Age Activities section Swimming here.
If you particularly enjoy a swimming class don’t forget to drop me a line and I can add it to the this, contact Mumbler here.
Happy splashing!
