Solemother is a new platform which enables mums to come together and organise themselves to get active, stay safe and be social. Through Solemother mums can meet up and exercise together and access a support network to help them stay motivated, get tips and meet new friends. Solemother aims to promote well being, combat loneliness, bring communities together and help women maintain good mental and physical health.
I love the idea not only of doing more exercise but of making some mummy friends so I wanted to see how we can bring this fantastic idea to Hull and the East Riding. It was set up in Manchester by Grace, a mum of 2 energetic, non-sleeping girls who teaches part time in a Reception class. She’s now keen to replicate the benefits for mums in other towns and cities so I spoke to her to find out more. Here’s what Grace told me…..
Being a mum I found the juggle of work, children and life is real and relentless but Solemother has enabled some ‘me’ time and head space in a hectic life. I’m not super fit and I like food, a lot. Solemother is the only thing that I have ever stuck to and actually enjoyed. I have made so many new friends in my local community and even more online.
We don’t take ourselves too seriously and we are full of all different shapes, sizes, ages, levels and abilities. We are more than a running group. We organise our own DIY boot camps, meet at the Trampoline park, organise walks, sign up for random events or Gin Cruises and so much more. There are no set times, days or activities. You control when, where and with who (never on your own between Dusk and Dawn) by using a simple website or a closed facebook group to organise activities such as runs in your area. It’s completely unique and nothing else like it which makes it quite hard to explain but here’s the idea….
Firstly you sign up at www.solemother.co.uk. It’s just £5 a month to join. From there you join can the closed facebook group of the ‘Solemother Hood’ (but don’t worry if you don’t use facebook, you can also do everything on the website). You can then virtually meet other Solemothers from all over the UK. You will be able to join an existing group in your area and arrange to meet other Solemothers to get out and active. If a group doesn’t exist yet in your area we will set one up for you and help you to build your army (there will be rewards for those of you that lead the way). Members also benefit from having their very own online Solemother Health and Fitness guru Ellen Bashforth (AKA Bashers) from Fit for Life. Bashers provides monthly updates, run question and answer sessions and more.
There are 3 group rules: 1. NO ONE GETS ‘STOOD UP’
Unless your head is hanging off you must turn up or give enough notice so no one is left waiting. SAFETY FIRST
2. NO ONE FLIES SOLO (between Dusk and Dawn)
Solemother is built around being safe and social
3. SELFIES MUST BE POSTED ON EVERY OUTING (filters are allowed)
This is to inspire other Solemothers and to help everyone make friends.
So waste no more money on unused Gym memberships. For the subscription of just £5 a month (cheaper than one exercise class or £1.25 a week!) you get all of the benefits of getting out and active but also making friends. We also believe in paying it forward and 10% of the monthly subscriptions are donated to SANDS (the stillbirth & neonatal death charity).
Joining a Solemother group and the Solemother Hood gives you so much more than heading out on your own. It gives you a sense of belonging to something positive, empowering, supportive and motivating. You will be welcomed into the Solemother community and connected to women who thrive on supporting each other. Our original group started with 3 members and now has nearly 200 but we want to bring this to many more mums.
