This annual event, held at the Scarborough Open Air Theatre, will delight visitors of all ages, making it a perfect way to kick off the festive season.
The festival runs from November 29th to December 1st 2024, transforming the Scarborough Open Air Theatre into a winter wonderland. The event starts on Friday evening at 5.30pm with the spectacular Sparkle Parade, featuring Animated Objects and community groups from across Scarborough. This lantern parade is a highlight, creating a magical atmosphere as it winds through Peasholm Park before making its way to the Open Air Theatre. Sparkle will be officially opened by Scarborough Charter Mayor, Cllr Janet Jefferson, with a little help from local radio presenter Paddy from This is the Coast Radio and seasonal superstar, the Grinch at 6pm.
Visitors can explore over 50 stalls offering a variety of crafts, gifts, and festive treats. From handmade ornaments to unique gifts from local artisans, the market is perfect for early Christmas shopping. Food and drink stalls will provide seasonal delights, including hot food, mulled wine, and other festive beverages.
One of the unique features of Scarborough Sparkle is the tipi bar, where visitors can relax, listen to live music, and toast marshmallows over an open fire.
The event also includes a stage hosted by This is the Coast featuring performances from local choirs and musicians, adding to the festive spirit. Throughout the weekend there will be competitions and giveaways, providing visitors with the chance to win exciting prizes.
There’ll be a snow machine, Christmas tree, Santa sleigh and appearances from some famous faces including the Grinch, Elsa, Anna and Olaf. Keep an ear out for the popular Back Chat Brass Band on Saturday too. The crowds will be entertained with appearances by some amazing interactive animated performers, including the stunning illuminated ghost caribou on the Saturday with the delightful snow lion making an appearance on Sunday afternoon.
Rides and attractions from O’Brien’s Fun Fairs, the event sponsors, will include a giant Ferris wheel, teacups ride, bungee trampolines, ghost train, fun house, inflatable slide, swings and hook a duck amongst others.
A free bus will operate a return service on Saturday and Sunday from Eastfield, passing through Crossgates, Falsgrave and Scarborough Town Centre, before arriving at Peasholm Park.
