During the last week of the school Summer holidays we had a week’s staycation in Whitby. We had to check out of our holiday let at 9am on Saturday and if we’d just driven home we’d have been back for 10.45! I looked at what attractions we would pass by on the drive back to Hull and Wolds Way Lavender & Nature Farm jumped out. It’s located near Scarborough, just off the road out to Malton, and was a 1 hour drive back to Hull afterwards, so a perfect day out to extend our Summer roadtrip!
It is a full day out, there is so much to do! It’s not a massive site but there are so many activities, games and play areas to move around that we did spend all day there. We have been before, around 3 years ago, and there has been a lot of new things added. Our favourite additions were a new slide and climbing wall in the den building area and a few new trails to do around the woodland walk and willow maze.
My children remembered loving the footgolf and foot-pool last time so rushed off to do that first. Then we did the play area and spent ages in the sand kitchen before doing the woodland trail. Next we needed snacks from the cafe! The willow maze is huge with loads of giant games throughout so that kept us busy for a long time. There is also a really good trail to do in the maze with nature themed questions that really helped my 7 year old with her reading and learning about animals and plants in the area. They distill the lavender on site in the distillery so we went to see that and the lovely lavender products that you can buy in the shop.
After a ride on the miniature steam train we did some den building! It was getting close to closing time by then and, knowing it would be an hours drive back, we had to literally drag the kids out of that area and back to the car.
They both said it was a fabulous day out and one of their favourites this summer. It is so peaceful and calm there, with fields of lavender and gardens to stroll around, and lots of nature to see. Everything is natural and I left feeling really relaxed (despite a day out with my 2 kids!). My children are 7 and 10 but this day out would suit all ages – much younger (last time we came my daughter was 3 and the play areas and trails are ideal for tots and pre-schoolers) as well as older, this would keep a teenager entertained too (and my 10 year old is acting like one of those already!). It’s also a great day out for grandparents to take grandchildren if they are looking after them is its all very safe and secure.
Wolds Way Lavender is open daily 10am-4pm until the end of September, then re-opens next May. Book tickets here
Dogs are welcome on a lead (which is fab as there aren’t many places that you can take dogs on family days out!).
