These are suggestions for days out more than an hours drive from Hull that are suitable for families and children.

Alton Towers & CBeebies Land

Approx 2 hours drive from Hull but well worth a visit (have several hotels on site to stay over in and run deals for 1 night and 2 days park tickets). The main theme park Alton Towers has a few rides for younger children plus a lot for older children. CBeebies land is perfect for under 5s with lots of nice rides, shows and things to see and do. Also a crazy golf and waterpark in the Splashlandings hotel.

Ark Wildlife Park

The ARK is a small wildlife park in Lincolnshire, and is home to a wide variety of animals in indoor and outdoor areas, with the usual farmyard friends, as well as meerkats, lemurs, and reptiles, and some more exotic species. Most of the animals came to the Ark after being rescued, many of which have been there for years, since it was just private, exotic animal sanctuary. Daily animal encounter shows, and experience days are also available. A play area is on site for younger kids, as well as a picnic area and a cafe.

Open – Summer season- 10 am – 5 pm, Winter season – 10 am – 4 pm (closed Mondays except for School & Public holidays) Last admission 1 hour before the park closes.

Brimham Rocks

Dramatic moorland rock formations near Harrogate, with lots of areas to explore and rocks to climb on.  Free entry and no need to book, £6 to park.

Calypso Cove

Come and discover Barnsley’s hidden treasure – the island paradise that is Calypso Cove Waterpark. Calypso Cove is home to fantastic flumes, sensational slides and wonderful waves – making it a great day out for the whole family! Splash your way through the slides, flumes and pools before retreating to The Hideout on poolside to refuel and relax with some hearty grog ‘n’ grub!

Cannonhall Farm

Great day out approx 1 hour 20 mins drive from Hull. Lots of large animal barns, tractor ride, excellent outdoor play areas and new indoor soft play, sheep racing and animal handling. Good cafe but gets very busy at weekends. Set in a country park so you can take a picnic and use the benches on the park

Chatsworth House & Estate

Bakewell, Derbyshire, DE45 1PP.

Open daily from 28th March to end of October but an access the parklands all year round. House open 10.30am – 5pm, gardens 10.30am – 6pm, farmyard and playground 10.30am – 5.30pm.

Magnificent stately home in the middle of the Peak District. House to view, great gardens for children with trails, maze and water features, parklands and river for paddling. Farmyard situated next to the house has several animal barns, animal handling and good outdoor play areas.

New outdoor theatre sessions during the summer with some great Shakespeare classics, great to take a picnic to.

Eureka!

An interactive children’s museum approximately 1 hour 20 mins drive from Hull.  A great family day out, lots of interactive, hands on exhibits for children that are fun and educational. Eureka also has the annual pass option – pay once and visit as many times as you like in the following year.  Pre-book tickets online.

Peppa Pig World at Paulton’s Park

Open weekends in March, daily from April – November. Located near Southampton so need to visit as part of a holiday.

Fabulous day out. Peppa Pig World is exactly like the TV show and amazing for children, kept in beautiful gardens with good small rides. The rest of the theme park is also suitable for young children, only a few rides are too big for under 5s. Well worth a trip if you are near the area, ideal for 2-5 year olds.

South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum

This is a great day out for enthusiasts as well as families, at £15 entry for a family, you will find a wide variety of aircraft to view and you can even sit in some of the cockpits.  From first aircrafts, jets, helicopters, memorabilia, dressing up for kids, and lots more – there is something for everyone.  Friendly staff, with cafe and gift shop on site.

The Forbidden Corner

A 2 hour drive from Hull you’ll find The Forbidden Corner – dubbed as The Strangest Place in the World. A unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises created within a four acre garden in the heart of Tupgill Park and the Yorkshire Dales. A tourist visitor attraction unlike anywhere that you have been before, ideal for the adventurers and those young at heart!

Well worth a visit with kids of all ages if you can stand the long drive. Admission is by pre-booked tickets only, call 01969 640638 to buy or reserve tickets. Opens from Spring to Autumn.

The World of Beatrix Potter

Located in the southern Lake District, a fabulous attraction for children, especially those who love Peter Rabbit on Cbeebies! Walk through areas with all the characters, including outside in Mr McGregors garden.

Thomasland at Drayton Manor Theme Park

Near Tamworth, Staffordshire, B78 3TW. 2 hours drive from Hull.

Excellent theme park and zoo for all ages. Thomasland is full of rides ideal for under 5s, very realistic to the books/TV show. Large zoo and outdoor dinosaur walk and playground. Main theme park has a variety of rides from big thrill rides for the grown ups and fun rides for children, plus train ride and boat trip on the lake. Good selection of food outlets, all reasonably priced and all selling meal kids boxes and snacks.

Themed hotel on site to stay in is good quality and has large outdoor park for children.

Thornton Hall Farm Country Park

A great family day out at Thornton Hall Farm, with lots to do for children including animals to feed and pet, indoor and outdoor play areas with slides, hay bale maze, rope swings and digger play area.  Plus quad bike and caterpillar rides in the field and giant bouncy pillows outside. Cafe and gift shop on site. They often have special weekend events running. Just under 2 hours drive from Hull.

Warner Brothers Studio Tour – Harry Potter World

Fantastic family day out for all Harry Potter fans. The tour takes you around the sets and scenes in the film and you learn lots about how the films were made. Mumbler visited recently and it took us 4.5 hours to get around the full tour (with a 12 and 8 year old).

Located near Watford, just off the M1/M25 junction (approx 4 hour drive from Hull, or closest train station is Watford). Must book tickets online, they sell out a long way in advance so plan ahead and book well in advance.

Whisby Nature Park

Just over an hour’s drive from Hull is Whisby Nature Park near Lincoln, which is a series of flooded gravel pits and associated habitats full of wildlife, walks and trails. There is an extensive network of paths, waymarked trails of varying lengths (between 1 and 3 miles) and several birdwatching hides.  Paths are mostly wheelchair and pushchair friendly, and also suitable for bikes.  Lovely day out with the family.

Facilities on site include toilets, shop, cafe, picnic area, disabled toilet, baby change, and an outdoor play area.
