J Jays – a family friendly coffee shop with a healthy attitude
J Jay’s is a family friendly cafe right in the heart of Hull; it’s on Savile Street, handily located between the Maritime Museum & Ferens Art Gallery and Queens Gardens. I’ve walked down that street lots of times when out and about with the kids in the city centre and never stopped in before, but last week I did and was very pleasantly surprised!
The cafe is run by Jay and his partner and they were both very welcoming. They specialise in healthy options and have a wide range of healthy and clean snacks, including vegan options. I try to give my kids a healthy option when possible and know they probably eat too many sweets and chocolate. When we’re out and about its easier to give in to their demands and grab a drink and snack I wouldn’t usually give them.
That’s why I first liked about J Jays, they sell smoothies which my kids love (and tops up their vitamin intake) and we even got a piece of flapjack that was actually made from chickpeas! They have other healthy snacks like dried mango. All food apart from a few snacks are produced in their own kitchens so they can tell you exactly what’s in it. It’s also ideal for adults or kids with allergies.
The 2nd thing I liked about J Jays was the coffee! I drink a lot and hate it when I go to a cafe and the coffee is awful. I can personally vouch for the fact that this was one of the best coffees I’ve had. They also have free WiFi and charging stations so I will definitely be going in for a coffee whenever I pass by and using that!
The 3rd thing I liked was the seating area. They have some seating downstairs but going upstairs you discover a large, spacious family room with comfy settees. There are book shelves that includes kids books as well as adult books. It just felt like a really relaxing place, giving you some time out from the city centre. Sometimes if we’ve been into the city centre to do the museums or a festival or event it can get quite chaotic and I have struggled for where to go with the kids for a rest and recharge. This family room was perfect, you can look out across the street and feel quite disconnected with the world. Peace, coffee and happy kids with healthy snacks, that made me a happy mum!
If you’re in the city centre with your children I can highly recommend a stop at J Jay’s for a healthy snack and a recharge.
