On Saturday night me and my husband had a date night at home, thanks to Pasta Evangelists! We have been having a family take away on a Saturday night during lockdown but realised we haven’t done anything just the two of us for the last 14 weeks. So, yesterday I did the kids some tea early, put a film on for them and then me an my husband sat down to our Italian at home.
Pasta Evangelists sent a lovely box, delivered by DHL that day, with ingredients to make our meals in 5 minutes. The box was lovely; to protect the food in transit they had used wool and an ice pack to cut down on plastic, and inside was our meal and a great booklet all about the food of Italy. Each week is a different region with dishes from that area, we had Palermo week (next week its Puglia week!).
There were 2 types of pasta, 2 sauces and 2 cheese toppings inside, with very simple steps to assemble. The pasta took 4 minutes in boiling water and the sauces just needed heating up, then combining together. I had some fresh basil on our windowsill so just added that myself, otherwise everything I needed was in the kit.
We had a sausage and fennel dish and a tomato and aubergine dish, both of which we shared. The portion size was good; my husband is a triathete and eats me out of house and home (he’d done a 100k cycle that morning, yep he’s mad!) and the meal was just enough for him and plenty for me. We eat a lot of pasta but I usually end up doing the same few sauces with them and it was really nice to have different flavours and try different combinations, its inspired me for dishes I will cook for the family.
My kids even managed to watch most of their film without interrupting us (they’d picked Labrynth, a classic 80’s film!). I’ve never tried a kit like this before but it made a really nice change to cooking everything myself or from our usual takeaway; I still liked assembling it all but I could not have made those sauces myself without a ton of ingredients and a lot of time. It’s the closest thing I’ve had for a long time to a proper Italian meal and its something I’d definitely do again.
